JOSE MOURINHO TELLS CHELSEA MANAGER ANTONIO CONTE TO SIGN 27-YEARS OLD MIDFIELDER

JOSE MOURINHO TELLS CHELSEA MANAGER ANTONIO CONTE TO SIGN 27-YEARS OLD MIDFIELDER

Jose Mourinho discusses Nemanja Matic's transfer from Chelsea and suggests the Blues should sign Danny Drinkwater

Jose Mourinho has told Antonio Conte that he cannot use the transfer of Nemanja Matic to Manchester United as an excuse for Chelsea not challenging for the title this season, and suggested that the Blues should sign Danny Drinkwater from Leicester as a replacement.

The Blues opted to sell Matic to Manchester United earlier this month as Chelsea agreed to let the midfielder join a direct rival following the arrival of Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco.

Matic has seemingly slotted straight into the team at Manchester United, with the midfielder having made his debut in a Red Devils shirt at Old Trafford last weekend.

The Serbian looks set to play a key role for the Red Devils this season and he already knows Mourinho well, having helped Chelsea win the title under the Portuguese coach back in 2014-15.

Chelsea have been linked with a move to sign Drinkwater from Leicester City in recent weeks, and Mourinho has suggested that if the Blues do complete a deal for the midfielder, then Conte can have no complaints about Matic’s exit.

Speaking at his pre-match news conference on Friday, Mourinho said: “When people say, for example, Chelsea lost an important midfield player [Matic], if you lose one but you buy Bakayoko and Drinkwater, for example, what’s the problem?

“The problem is when you sell and you don’t buy. When you sell and you keep buying, what’s the problem?

“You are probably even stronger, so I think every top team in the Premier League is potentially strong enough with the financial situation to be fighting for everything.

“They have very good teams, very good players, and I don’t see any reason for them not to be fighting for the title.”

Manchester United are looking to challenge for the title this season after they finished sixth in the Premier League last term.
