Islam: The Civilization above every other civilization
Among the Yoruba Nation which I happen to be a son, there's a popular adage that says "ti ina ba njo ni, ti a ra eni laa kan gbon" literally means "when people are ablaze, you clean up yourself first"
This idea has been part of my understanding for a significant number of years. But I was shocked and surprised to see that an event in Islamic history has clearly swallowed that up. Beating down this particular ideology.
This is completely awe inspiring and overwhelming. My sweat pore was raising time and time again. I could hardly believe the state of my mind in my deepest thought. I almost cried out. Please take your time to read. Here it is:
During the battle of Yarmuk, after the intensity of the conflict had subsided, and the injured Muslims were dying on the extremely hot sand, I summoned my energy and started to look for Harith, my uncle's son. After walking among the wounded soldiers who were taking their last breaths, I found him. Unfortunately, Harith was in a sea of blood and could barely speak even with the movement of his eyes. I showed him the leather water-bottle which I carried and asked him, "Do you want some water?"
His lips were dry from the hot weather and probably he wished to have some water. It seemed as if he was trying to tell me his painful situation by the movement of his eyes. I opened the leather water bottle and was ready to give him some water. Suddenly Ikrima's voice was heard in the distance. "Water!... Water!... Please a drop of water!"
When the son of my uncle heard this cry, he indicated with the movement of his eyes to take the water to him. I rushed to IKirma, bypassing the martyrs who were lying in the hot sand. Finally, I reached Ikrima and was ready to place the bottle of water in his hand. Suddenly, we heard the moaning of Iyash:
"Please give me a drop of water! For God's sake, a drop of water!"
When IKirma heard his cry for water, he indicated with the movement of his hand to take the water to Iyash. Like Harith, he had refused to drink. When I found Iyash after searching for him among the wounded martyrs, I heard his last words. He was saying,
"O Allah! We have not spared our lives in the cause of faith. Do not spare from us the level of martyrdom. Forgive our mistakes!"
He was about to become a martyr. He saw the water bottle I brought but he did not have time to drink because he could barely finish uttering the Kalima-i-Shadah (The formula which states: I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah; I also bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger).
I came back immediately to IKirma and while trying to offer him water, I realized that he had become a martyr. I ran to the son of my uncle, Harith. Unfortunately, his soul had also returned to Allah. Painfully, a bottle of water had been left full among the three martyrs.

This is the actions and lesson from the companions of Muhammad. If the followers could sacrifice for themselves this much. I wonder how the master would be. (Peace be upon them all) Ameen!
