2,500 ghost workers discovered in Benue

2,500 ghost workers discovered in Benue

The Benue State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, has commenced investigation into the alleged recruitment of 2,500 unqualified and ghost teachers on its payroll.

Executive Chairman of the Board, Reverend Philip Tachin made this known weekend, shortly after being screened at the ongoing modified table payment and screening exercise organized by the state government in Makurdi.

                Gov Samuel Ortom

Reverend Tachin said the investigation became necessary to enable the board ascertain the employment status of those concerned, their respective qualifications and to check leakage in the finances of the board.

He said, “the committee we have set up will help us fish out ghost teacher and workers on the payroll of the board and to ascertain the qualifications of those who claim to be teachers on our payroll.

  •  It may surprise you to know that we presently have over 18,700 teachers in 2,753 primary schools and we still have complains of insufficient teachers in our schools.

  • It is a strange development, so with the committee in place it will help us fish out ghost workers and also help us apprehend those behind the fraud for necessary prosecution.

  • The Executive Chairman who commended the state government for embarking on the modified table payment exercise said it was long overdue given the huge sums the state lost monthly to masterminds of the ghost workers’ fraud in the system.
